Selaginella uncinata is a low, creeping spikemoss with tiny, densely arranged leaves that develop a characteristic metallic blue sheen under the right lighting. This effect is exactly what makes the plant stand out from other ground cover species and create an exceptional, almost "glowing" carpet in the terrarium. Thanks to its compact growth and delicate structure, it works perfectly as a foreground plant in humid tropical layouts.
Blue sheen from the humid forests of Asia
Selaginella uncinata comes from the humid, shaded forests of East and Southeast Asia, especially China and Vietnam. In nature, it grows close to the ground, often near streams, on constantly fresh, moist substrate and in places sheltered from direct sunlight. In the terrarium, it looks best planted at the front of the enclosure, between roots, stones or near the edge of the water zone, where it can gradually spread into a soft, compact cover.
A striking ground cover plant for humid layouts
The greatest advantage of Selaginella uncinata is its iridescent coloration - the leaves can shimmer green, turquoise and blue, especially in soft, diffused light. The plant forms dense, low carpets and fills empty spaces between layout elements very well without obscuring larger plants. It fits perfectly in tropical terrariums, paludariums, vivariums with amphibians and any enclosure where a natural, forest floor character is desired.
Requirements and cultivation in the terrarium
Selaginella uncinata grows best in a high humidity environment, with constantly slightly moist but well-draining substrate. It does not tolerate drying out - even a short-term drop in humidity can cause the shoot tips to dry and the plant to lose its compact habit. It prefers semi-shaded or bright positions, but without direct sun. Excessively strong light can weaken the blue sheen effect, while stable, humid conditions allow it to thicken quickly and form an even, decorative surface. IMPORTANT: do not allow the substrate or the air to dry out. At too low humidity, Selaginella uncinata quickly loses its decorative appearance and starts drying from the edges.
