Exo Terra Sub Stratum substrate comes from the mineral-rich foothills of the Aso volcano in Japan. The natural, highly nutrient-rich volcanic soil is the ideal substrate for growing plants in bioactive terrariums. Sub Stratum’s friable, low-density structure encourages populations of beneficial nitrifying bacteria to flourish, creating a self-sustaining, living terrarium ecosystem. Active beneficial bacteria in the soil break down biological waste, keeping the terrarium clean and healthy. The porous surface allows for excellent drainage and aeration, promoting strong root growth.
3 ways to use Sub Stratum:
- As a sole substrate
- Mixed with other substrates
- As a drainage layer
Sole Substrate
Exo Terra Sub Stratum can be used as the only substrate. In this case, add a layer several centimetres thick to the bottom of the terrarium. The living bacteria activate when the substrate comes into contact with water or organic residues. Organic matter, such as food scraps and animal faeces, will decompose over time. The absorption properties of volcanic ash eliminate unpleasant odours. The substrate should be rinsed from time to time and replaced with fresh substrate every 12 months.
Mixed with other substrate
Fertile, nutritious soil is the basis for growing healthy plants. Natural soil contains numerous living micro-organisms – from bacteria to fungi, protozoa and arthropods. They are responsible for disposing of residues left behind by animals or dead plant parts.
By adding Sub Stratum to another natural substrate, you enrich it with numerous minerals such as calcium, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Thanks to its porous, absorbent structure, it will also aid water distribution and make the soil more aerated.
Drainage layer
Exo Terra Sub Stratum will work perfectly as a bottom drainage layer underneath another substrate, ensuring water flow and optimal bioactivity. Plants can be planted in the top layer (such as Exo Terra Rain Forest) while their roots will thrive in the Sub Stratum layer, drawing nutrients from it.
On the surface, it is worth using a layer of leaf mulch to provide dry areas, shelter and living areas for all the organisms in the terrarium. The leaves also reduce the drying out of the substrate at a rapid rate.
Substrates in bioactive terrariums play a key role in creating the microclimate of the terrarium by storing water and thus increasing humidity. The reproduction of humid rainforest conditions is crucial for the health and well-being of many reptile, amphibian or invertebrate species inhabiting tropical zones. The high absorbency of Exo Terra Tropical Substrates allows them to absorb excess water created by frequent terrarium sprinkling and release it slowly over the course of the day, providing optimal living conditions for your pet. High humidity is very important during the moulting process and also has beneficial effects on health, including respiratory health.
Exo Terra Tropical Substrates allow your pets to dig and burrow into them, giving them a sense of security and comfort. Because the substrates retain large amounts of water within them, animals can absorb it through their skin, thus minimising the risk of health-threatening dehydration. They are also ideal for species that bury their eggs in the substrate. The moist microclimate promotes the development of embryos inside the eggs and helps the hatching process.
Exo Terra Tropical Substrates products have been formulated to be as safe to use as possible, even with the most sensitive animal and plant species. They have been sieved to remove dust and debris and to round off sharp edges. The size and shape of the bark pieces give an ideal balance between high water absorption and air permeability. In Exo Terra’s substrate your plants will grow fast and healthy as never before. The loose, breathable structure supports the proliferation of nitrifying bacteria and micro-organisms that reduce decay and regulate mould in the terrarium.
Exo Terra Tropical Substrates are completely natural, non-toxic and can be composted in your backyard garden!
